12/20/2023 0 Comments Bonfire peaks platformsInitially, though? Initially, Bonfire Peaks just irritated me. Without a word - without a flicker of emotion - he steps through them. He settled himself down beside every cold, dark campfire and watched as it sparked into life, opening a portal between this place and a puzzling otherworld. It didn't hold him back from jumping into one of those swan pedalo things and just keep on peddlin' - alone, and in the dark - until he pulled up beside a moss-strewn dock at the foot of this mountain. ![]() That didn't stop him from getting here, though. I've always had a thing for the mute protagonist - I do so love the stoic, silent type - and he goes a step further: not only never speaking, but never emoting, either, given he doesn't even have eyes. We're never properly introduced, but this nameless, expressionless, yet grimly determined man intrigues me. One man's trash is another's treasure and all that. Plus a shoebox, perhaps, and what may or may not be a cuddly toy. I think there's a poster or photograph in there? A man in a white hat. It feels important to me, somehow the key to unravelling this mystery. ![]() You've no idea the number of times I've zoomed in, peered a little closer, trying to decipher what it is he's burning. Availability: Out tomorrow on Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC.Does it get easier, do you think? After the second time - the tenth time, the fiftieth time, the hundredth time - does it stop hurting? Do you stop feeling it? Or does every box stuffed into the flames make your heart ache just that little bit more? Bonfire Peaks review It's harder still to imagine how it must feel to keep doing it, over and over and over again. It's hard to imagine what has happened for a man to think there are no options left other than to take a box of his stuff - a box of cherished memories, I think, although we're never formally told - and shove it into a bonfire. With soothing music and a melancholic mood, there's a strange celebration of hitting bottom and burning everything down together.Gentle storytelling and challenging puzzles on an island of intrigue. The result is a wordless story about a downcast man who has found it necessary to burn everything he owns. As Josh Seybert put it, "The amazing thing about Bonfire Peaks is that the puzzles are impossible to solve until all of a sudden they aren’t and you are suddenly the smartest person alive." ![]() Along with a lot of variety you can always rewind moves and you don't actually have to finish them all if you get stuck on one in particular. At times it will seem a level is unsolvable or broken, but perseverance (and the occasional YouTube video if you need it) always reveals a way forward.Īlthough some puzzles are really tough, the game is kind about its challenge. Some crumble, some flow along water, some you must work with in multiple angles. As you progress the boxes in each puzzle offer new interactions. It's Sokoban rendered in isometric form.īetween stages you explore a world by placing the blocks you unlock in each level. Each stage continues this challenge, although offering more boxes and trickier scenarios. It's unusual from the start with the simple instruction to "Burn Your Belongings" setting not only the puzzle-solving mechanic but the tone and theme of the game. It's a tightly designed puzzle game about closure, that invites you to help the protagonist dispose of his belongings by getting the box to the fire. Unlike the generalised blocks of that game, here the landscape is lovingly crafted and pulsing with life. Bonfire Peaks is a puzzle game where you explore a Minecraft-looking world.
